Some children are born with cleft lip and palate. This can lead to significant difficulties with both speech and feeding. These structural issues are frequently corrected with surgery as soon as possible, but even with surgery, SLT is usually
required to help the child produce clear speech sounds.

A speech and language therapist is important to the cleft team and the treatment journey. Their role in assisting with feeding and providing support throughout the child’s speech development journey is essential in the early childhood journey to ensure a healthy integration into society.
